Critical of C-sections

Why we don’t just plan a C-section in the Netherlands

Giving birth via C-section, even when there’s no medical necessity? In Turkey this is now forbidden. The number of C-sections there is much higher than here: more than half of all births are via this surgical procedure, even though there is often no medical reason. In the Netherlands we are well below 20 percent. We are therefore much more critical of ‘just’ scheduling a C-section. And with good reason.

More C-sections, more risks

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a guideline of 10 to 15% of births via C-section. Above 20 percent it offers no additional health benefits — on the contrary. Every surgery carries risks, and that also applies to a C-section. There is a higher chance of infections and it can also pose more risk in a subsequent pregnancy. Moreover, recovery after a C-section birth takes longer than after a vaginal birth. A natural birth is therefore better for both mother and child, provided it is medically responsible.

When then is a C-section appropriate?

Convenience, such as scheduled care, or financial considerations should never be the reason to choose a C-section. When do you opt for this surgery? When it is medically necessary. For example, because the baby is in a breech position, a placenta is covering the cervix, or if the mother and/or baby are in immediate danger.

Fear of childbirth is understandable — and open for discussion

We know that some women want a C-section because they are afraid. Pain or fear of the unknown can be a reason for fear of childbirth, as can a previous traumatic experience. At our midwifery practice we take all those feelings very seriously. We take the time to talk with you about it and explore where your fear comes from. We can also refer you to specific programs to help you figure out which form of giving birth is the best choice for you. And of course we help you gradually start believing in yourself. This way we prepare you and help you work confidently toward a natural birth.

Your strength, your birth

At Verloskundigen Amsterdam Zuid we guide you step by step during your pregnancy. From the very first consultation we work together on building trust in your body and your own strength. You don’t have to do it alone: our experienced and involved midwives are by your side. During your pregnancy and during your birth. Whether that is at home, in the birthing center or during an outpatient birth in the hospital. And do you want extra support to help you relax better during childbirth? That’s possible too. Such as with laughing gas in the birthing center, through a water birth or by guiding you with your breathing.

Natural if possible, medical if necessary

A natural birth is not always possible. But if it is, it is almost always better for mother and child. With fewer risks and a quicker recovery. As midwives we help you toward and during such a natural birth. And if needed, we will of course refer you. Because a safe and good birth for you and your baby is always the most important thing.
