THE JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY

You’re pregnant! Now what?

4 weeks pregnant?

You are 4 weeks pregnant, congratulations! You have probably just done a pregnancy test and have many questions about what to do next, monitoring the foetus, and how to care for yourself and your unborn baby as well as possible. You can direct all those questions to one of our midwives. We are here to support you before, during and after childbirth.

Making an appointment with the midwife

As soon as you have had a positive pregnancy test, you can call or email us to make an appointment for your first consultation. You do not require a GP referral. You can make an appointment for your first consultation online via the registration form, or directly via our practice assistants. They are available Monday through Friday from 9.00am to 4.00pm.

Your first consultation

Your first consultation at our midwifery practice comprises a comprehensive registration process and lasts about 40 minutes. During this consultation, we will ask various questions about your health, medical history and the potential risks of this pregnancy. We also provide you with a great deal of information about the course of pregnancy and dietary and lifestyle advice for the coming months

Trimester ultrasound scan

We carry out the first ultrasound when you reach the first trimester. It provides a very good indication of how your pregnancy is progressing. This is useful if you had irregular periods, for example. A separate appointment for the first trimester ultrasound is made during your initial consultation. If you would like an early ultrasound at 10 weeks, we can arrange that too. Do not hesitate to ask!

Risk assessment

During the registration process, we will discuss the possibility of conducting a risk assessment. This test is limited to assessing the risk of giving birth to a child with chromosomal abnormalities, including Down’s syndrome. We will discuss this with you in detail, so that you can make a well-informed choice.
