The vaginal steam bath, also known as the yoni steam, is sometimes recommended as a beneficial and cleansing treatment after childbirth. But is it really? And what exactly is a vaginal steam bath? We did some research for you and have laid out the truths and myths of a \u201cv-steam\u201d here.

What is a Yoni Steam?<\/h2>\n

The word \u2018yoni\u2019 is Sanskrit for vagina but can also mean \u2018source\u2019 or \u2018origin.\u2019 So, the yoni steam is simply another term for a vaginal steam bath. It originates from traditional Chinese medicine and is also practiced in countries like Suriname, Morocco, and Turkey. It is sometimes used for menstrual pain, with each culture using its own unique mix of herbs. But the purpose remains the same: cleansing the vagina with steam and herbs.<\/p>\n\"Vaginal\n

How Does a Vaginal Steam Bath Work?<\/h2>\n

In a vaginal steam bath, you sit above warm water with various herbs added. These could be anything from chamomile, lavender, yarrow, to calendula. The warmth of the steam is said to help naturally cleanse and support the vagina. After childbirth, it can feel refreshing and even have healing effects.<\/p>\n

Important: Never Use Boiling Water!<\/h2>\n

For a yoni steam, a pot with 1 to 1.5 liters of boiled water is used, with the herbal mixture added. Make sure the water has significantly cooled to avoid burns! Place a clean towel over the pot and sit above it. You do this until there is no more steam, or until it no longer feels comfortable.<\/p>\n

When Is a Yoni Steam Safe or Not Safe?<\/h2>\n

This steam bath can be used as early as the first weeks after childbirth. However, it is important that any stitches have dissolved and that you\u2019re no longer experiencing significant bleeding. It is also not recommended if you have low blood pressure or are feeling nauseous, as the steam bath could increase blood flow.<\/p>\n

Not Scientifically Proven, No Objection Either<\/h2>\n

Whether a vaginal steam bath really helps or cleanses is a matter of debate. It is not scientifically proven. The KNOV (Royal Dutch Organization of Midwives) does not encourage it but does not oppose it either.<\/p>\n

A Moment of Me-Time<\/h2>\n

If nothing else, the steam bath offers a moment for yourself. And in those first weeks after childbirth, that\u2019s often a luxury in itself. Make it a pampering moment and let someone else watch your baby for a bit, and you\u2019ll likely feel refreshed. For some women, the yoni steam has an emotional effect, bringing up tears. It is, in any case, a true \u201cme-time\u201d moment, which is rare so soon after childbirth.<\/p>\n

Post-Birth Ritual<\/h2>\n

As beautiful as your baby\u2019s birth is, childbirth can be an intense experience, especially down below. Some women struggle with the experience and want to feel their body is theirs again over time. A yoni steam as a ritual after childbirth can support this.<\/p>\n

Postpartum Treatment Without Certification<\/h2>\n

The vaginal steam bath is also seen as a postpartum treatment, but it does not yet have official certification. If you\u2019re interested in a vaginal steam bath after childbirth, be sure to check the provider\u2019s qualifications and read reviews. Or ask your friends. More women are opting for a vaginal steam bath after childbirth, so there\u2019s a good chance someone can recommend a place to go \u2013 or avoid.<\/p>\n
