    \nBefore you sign up, you can always meet the midwives without obligation. Use that moment to feel whether you click.<\/li>\n
  2. Ask within your network<\/b>
    \nAsk friends, colleagues, and neighbours about their experiences. A personal recommendation often tells you a lot.<\/li>\n
  3. Check whether their vision matches yours<\/b>
    \nDo you want a natural birth? Or rather in the hospital? Or would you like the option to give birth in a birthing centre? Check what the practice offers and whether they support your preferences.<\/li>\n
  4. Pay attention to the care and extras<\/b>
    \nWhat does the midwifery practice offer in terms of extras? Do they perform ultrasounds themselves or work with a fixed partner? Do they offer Centering Pregnancy like we do with our WhatsApp groups? And how much time is there for you during the check-ups?<\/li>\n

    \nIs the practice easily accessible for you? By car, bike and\/or public transport? And are they available for urgent questions?<\/li>\n

    When should I look for a midwife?<\/h2>\n

    As soon as you know you are pregnant, you can get in touch. Even before that if you have questions you want to discuss before becoming pregnant. The first check-up is usually scheduled around 8 weeks of pregnancy. You do not need to visit your GP first. You can register directly with the midwifery practice of your choice without a referral.<\/p>\n

    You can call, email or fill in the registration form. Some practices, like ours in Amsterdam-Zuid, also offer the option to register via WhatsApp. After registering, you will receive a confirmation and the first appointment will be scheduled.

    How much does a midwife cost?<\/h2>\n

    Good question! In the Netherlands, midwifery care is fully covered by basic health insurance. You do not pay any deductible for your appointments with the midwife. Standard ultrasounds are usually included as well, though blood tests are not. And would you like extra ultrasounds without medical necessity, simply because it\u2019s fun? Then you will need to pay for those yourself.<\/p>\n
