8 practical tips for choosing a midwife

  1. Schedule an introductory meeting
Before you sign up, you can always meet the midwives without obligation. Use that moment to feel whether you click.
  2. Ask within your network
Ask friends, colleagues, and neighbours about their experiences. A personal recommendation often tells you a lot.
  3. Check whether their vision matches yours
Do you want a natural birth? Or rather in the hospital? Or would you like the option to give birth in a birthing centre? Check what the practice offers and whether they support your preferences.
  4. Pay attention to the care and extras
What does the midwifery practice offer in terms of extras? Do they perform ultrasounds themselves or work with a fixed partner? Do they offer Centering Pregnancy like we do with our WhatsApp groups? And how much time is there for you during the check-ups?
  5. Check accessibility
Is the practice easily accessible for you? By car, bike and/or public transport? And are they available for urgent questions?
  6. Ask about personalised guidance
Have you had a difficult experience before, or are you particularly anxious? Then look for a practice experienced in offering personal guidance.
  7. Do you feel heard?
Is there truly attention for you during the introductory meeting? And are your wishes being listened to?
  8. Listen to your intuition
Does it feel right? Then that’s usually the best choice.

When should I look for a midwife?

As soon as you know you are pregnant, you can get in touch. Even before that if you have questions you want to discuss before becoming pregnant. The first check-up is usually scheduled around 8 weeks of pregnancy. You do not need to visit your GP first. You can register directly with the midwifery practice of your choice without a referral.

How do I contact a midwife?

You can call, email or fill in the registration form. Some practices, like ours in Amsterdam-Zuid, also offer the option to register via WhatsApp. After registering, you will receive a confirmation and the first appointment will be scheduled.

How much does a midwife cost?

Good question! In the Netherlands, midwifery care is fully covered by basic health insurance. You do not pay any deductible for your appointments with the midwife. Standard ultrasounds are usually included as well, though blood tests are not. And would you like extra ultrasounds without medical necessity, simply because it’s fun? Then you will need to pay for those yourself.

How often do you visit the midwife during pregnancy?

How often you visit the midwife during your pregnancy varies. It depends on the stage of your pregnancy and of course on how your pregnancy is progressing. If needed, we always schedule additional check-ups. As a basic guideline:

  • Up to 24 weeks: every 4 to 6 weeks
  • From 24 weeks: every 3 to 4 weeks
  • Final weeks: weekly

Where do you report that you are pregnant?

Make an appointment with a midwifery practice as soon as you know you are pregnant. Are you taking medication and unsure whether you can continue? Then it’s wise to inform us, your GP and your pharmacy as soon as possible. This also applies if you have high blood pressure or other conditions that may affect your pregnancy. You officially need to inform your employer 3 months before your due date, but the earlier you tell them, the sooner they can take your situation into account—especially if you usually lift heavy objects, stand for long periods or work with certain substances. Inform your health insurer as well that you are pregnant.
